What is the difference between points and goals in soccer?
How do points and goals relate to rankings in league and tournament play?
Points are the primary criterion for league standings, goals are used in tiebreakers.
In most professional soccer leagues, a win gets you three points and a tie one point. This was first introduced in England in 1981, and adopted by FIFA for all international tournaments in 1995, and spread to other national leagues from there. Prior to that, a win was worth two points, so that the points system was identical to the percentage system used in most US leagues, in that a rare tie gets half credit. Now, obviously, the three-point system encourages winning.
For example, in the MLS right now the LA Galaxy have a record of 6-5-3 (wins-losses-ties; some leagues order these WTL though) and have 21 points - 6x3 + 3x1. If they were in the same conference as Toronto, they would be tied on points. LA would have the edge on "goal difference", which is the usual first tie-breaker. Goal difference is simply goals scored less goals allowed. LA has scored 32 and allowed 28 (league highs in both, BTW) for a GD of 4; Toronto has scored 18 and allowed 18 for a 0 GD.
